Maple Syrup Time at Minnesota Farmhouse

One of the best things about living on a farm is embracing the changing seasons—and that includes the sweet tradition of making maple syrup! Every spring, as the days warm up and the nights stay cold, the sap starts flowing, and it's time to get to work.

This year, we’re especially grateful for a job that allows us to spend time together as a family, passing down this rewarding tradition to the next generation. There’s something magical about watching clear sap transform into golden syrup, and even more special when little hands help along the way!

The Process: From Tree to Table

Step 1

Filtering the Sap

Before we start boiling, the sap needs to be filtered to remove any impurities. This year, we upgraded our system with a multi-stage filter and pump setup. This ensures cleaner sap, which leads to better-tasting syrup!

Step 2

The Evaporator at Work

Once the sap is filtered, it heads to the wood-fired evaporator. This is where the magic happens—boiling away the water content and leaving behind pure, sweet maple goodness. In the photo below, you can see the evaporator in action, steam billowing as the sap cooks down.

Step 3

Keeping the Fire Going

Making maple syrup is a labor-intensive process that requires constant attention to the fire. The hotter the fire, the faster the sap boils! Here’s a shot of the fire roaring inside our barrel-style evaporator, helping us reduce 40 gallons of sap down to just one gallon of syrup.

Family Traditions & Sweet Memories

One of the best parts of the process?

Watching our kids get involved. Whether it’s hauling buckets, checking the fire, or simply enjoying the sweet rewards, they’re learning hands-on lessons about hard work and sustainability. In this photo, our little helper is busy collecting fresh sap to add to the evaporator!

We love knowing that in a few weeks, we’ll be pouring this homemade syrup over stacks of pancakes, knowing exactly where it came from—and who helped make it!
